Moving to Malaysia

What you need to know when moving to Malaysia

Moving to Malaysia & ShippingWhether you’re emigrating on your own or with your family, we know it can be daunting to try and organise your belongings and figure out the best way to ship them.

Here at Transworld, we are experts on what you will need to know for moving to Malaysia. From Malaysian customs, to shipping options and restrictions; we have you covered. Our friendly team are here to make your international moving experience as easy and stress-free as possible.

To help you with your move to Malaysia, we’ve put together some useful tips and advice about:

  1. Shipping options
  2. Malaysian customs
  3. What you can and can’t take

Shipping to Malaysia: your options

When Shipping freight to Malaysia from New Zealand, Transworld offers a variety of shipping options.

To ensure you pick the best option for you, make sure you consider the following:

  1. How much do you want to ship?
  2. What’s your budget?
  3. How fast do you want your goods to arrive?

FCL: shipping all your household belongings

FCL stands for "full container load". This is the best option for those who are moving their entire household, and need the space of a large container.

When moving to Malaysia, if you want your belongings to arrive as quickly as possible, FCL is one of the quickest options. This is because you don’t have to share it and once it is filled it will be ready to go straight away.

Key benefits:

  1. Large capacity: FCL is usually plenty of space for a whole household.
  2. Speedy shipping: once your FCL is packed, it will be loaded onto the first available vessel and be on its way as soon as possible.
  3. Broad shipping locations: our FCL service covers most major ports in Malaysia.

Groupage: sharing the shipping

Shipping to MalaysiaIf you’re moving to Malaysia, with a small number of household items, sharing a container on a groupage basis is a great choice.

By picking groupage, you will only have to pay for the space you use. While this is a more cost effective option, please keep in mind that this will take a little longer since you are sharing with others.

Key benefits:

  1. Affordable: you only pay for the amount of space you use in the container.
  2. Flexible space: you can pack in a few boxes, or a small household worth.
  3. Ship to many locations: our groupage service covers most major ports in Malaysia.

Air Freight: the fast option

The fastest option we have is flying your belongings.

When shipping to Malaysia, we recommend air freight for those who are not taking many items or for those with items they need quickly on arrival. Keep in mind however, that this is the most costly shipping option.

Key benefits:

  1. Flying fast: if you want to get your items to Malaysia as fast as possible this is the best choice.
  2. Easy for a few items: air freight is a simple option if you only have a few small items.
  3. Flies to many cities: our air freight service covers most major airports in Malaysia.

How long will shipping to Malaysia take?

Each shipping (or flying) option has slightly varied transit times to arrive in your new home Malaysia:

  1. FCL: If you’re shipping a full-container-load, this will take approximately 4-6 weeks to arrive in Malaysia.
  2. Groupage: When shipping your belongings to Malaysia on a groupage basis, this will take approximately 9-11 weeks. This is due to the sharing nature of groupage.
  3. Air Freight: Flying your items is the quickest option. If you choose to ship your items by air, your items will arrive in Malaysia in approximately 2-3 weeks.
