For your transition to living in Canada, we’ve put together useful tips and advice around:

  1. Shipping options
  2. Canadian customs
  3. What you can and can't take

Shipping your personal belongings: your options

When planning your move to Canada, you've got plenty of options. To help you choose the best shipping method for your needs, we've compiled some key questions to ask yourself:

  1. How much do you want to ship?
  2. What's your budget?
  3. How fast do you want your goods to arrive?

FCL: For when you're moving the lot

We recommend FCL (Full Container Load) when you need to move your whole household. As the name suggests, you get a full container to yourself.

It's also one of the faster shipping methods available for moving to Canada, because there's no one else's freight to wait for before the container can be shipped.

Key benefits:

  1. Space: Fit your whole household into one of our containers.
  2. Speed: Once it's packed up and ready to go, there's no more waiting around for other people's belongings, and your container will be shipped.
  3. Ship to everywhere in Canada: No place is too remote for our team.

Groupage: for when you're happy to share the load

Options for Shipping to CanadaIf you've got a smaller load, we offer the choice to share a container with others also moving to Canada.

Our Groupage option will be more cost-effective, but does mean waiting until the container is full before it gets shipped.

Key benefits:

  1. Economical: Groupage is the cheapest shipping option for your move to Canada.
  2. Space efficiency: Only pay for the space you're actually taking up in the container.
  3. Ship to everywhere in Canada: No matter where you're moving to in Canada, we've got you covered.

Air Freight: when time is of the essence

We offer this service for those who need a few things shipped quickly. This option is the priciest, but the quickest, and very handy for essential items.

Key benefits:

  1. Speed: this is our fastest shipping option.
  2. Emergencies: For something you need sent over ASAP, this option is for you.
  3. Ship to everywhere in Canada: Door-to-door service, no matter where you're living in Canada.

How long will shipping take?

  1. FCL: Approximately 6-7 weeks via Vancouver or 8-9 weeks via Toronto.
  2. Groupage: Approximately 12-16 weeks via Vancouver or 16-20 weeks via Toronto.
  3. Air Freight: Approximately 2-3 weeks.

We'll guide you through customs

Canadian CustomsAs part of our door-to-door service, we'll see you and your items through the customs process of moving to Canada. It's what we do best, and we draw on years of experience to ease you through the process.

Under Canadian law, you need to be in Canada when your shipment arrives, and will need to be present at the Customs office to clear your items.

We take care of:

  1. Making sure you have all the paperwork you need to fill out.
  2. Instructing you on which CBSA office (Canada Border Services Agency) you need to be at to clear your goods.

What you need to do:

  1. Complete Form BSF186 before your arrival in Canada. This is essentially a full list of the goods you plan to ship, including value, make, model and serial number (where applicable). Those belongings which have been used for 6 months or more prior to shipping can be brought in duty-free.
  2. Make sure to bring your up-to-date Passport, Visa and Residency Documents to clear your items at Customs.

As there are certain items, such as jewellery, which require a full description, we recommend taking a look at the customs website before you prepare to pack up.

What you can and can't ship to Canada

What you can't: prohibited and restricted items

When relocating to Canada it's wise to take into account their shipping restrictions, as they have fairly strict regulations on some items.

Some items that are restricted or prohibited include:

  1. Health products and medicines.
  2. Fruits and vegetables. Avoid shipping food because of the additional clearance process and costs. If you do, expect delays.
  3. There is no restriction on alcohols but taxes will apply, and each province has their own process for importation.
  4. Anything contaminated with soil.

These requirements can change frequently, so if you have any questions, give us a ring, we're happy to help!

Bringing firearms and weapons into Canada

Bringing Firearms into CanadaIf you're planning on shipping any firearms or weapons into Canada when you relocate, there are several things you need to do:

  1. Declare them. Make sure our team is aware so they can be included in the inventory of your items.
  2. Obtain a permit before shipment, which can be obtained from the Canadian Firearms Centre, Ottawa.
  3. With a permit, your firearm can join your other goods in shipment.

What you can: shipping vehicles to Canada

Because of its harsh conditions, Canada has strict safety restrictions when it comes to bringing vehicles in. Each province also has its own licencing and importing regulations for vehicles, so we recommend contacting your soon-to-be local authority. Before you prepare to ship your car, make sure you have met these requirements:

  1. Ensure your car complies with Canadian standards. You can see details of these requirements here.
  2. You are carrying proof of vehicle ownership when you clear Customs.
  3. You are carrying your passport when you clear Customs.

What you can: bringing your pets to Canada

There are no quarantine requirements for entering Canada, which makes bringing your pet on your move to Canada a whole lot easier.

  1. Pet dogs do not have to be quarantined, nor do they need a microchip. All dogs must have the necessary vaccinations (with certificates) according to their age. Your dog will undergo an inspection upon arrival, for which a small fee applies.
  2. Pet cats must be accompanied by a rabies vaccination certificate, or a veterinary certificate that declares the cat is from recognised rabies-free country.
  3. For other, non-traditional pets, other restrictions may apply. Give us a call and the Transworld team will be happy to help!

  1. Shipping options
  2. American customs
  3. What you can and can’t take

Shipping your personal belongings: your options

There are a number of different options you can choose between when shipping your items to America. To make the best choice for you, consider these factors:

  1. How much do you want to ship?
  2. What’s your budget?
  3. How fast do you want your goods to arrive?

FCL: for when you need the space

The full-container load (FCL) is ideal for an entire household of items, as you get the container all to yourself and do not have to share.

The other benefit of FCL is that it is one of the faster shipping methods. Once your items have been checked and loaded, they can get on their way to America.

Transworld regularly ship FCL to all ports in the USA.

Key benefits:

  1. Space: a full-container can fit a whole household’s worth of items.
  2. Efficient shipping times: as soon as you are ready to ship your items, they can get on their way.
  3. Ship to any port in America: our full-containers can be sent wherever you need them America-wide.

Groupage: for when you’re happy to share

slide 35Groupage shipping is a great option for those moving to the USA with only a few items, or a smaller household.

This option enables you to share container space with other individuals similarly relocating to America. An economical choice, this shipping option does take slightly longer as the container needs to be filled before it can be sent to the USA.

Key benefits:

  1. Cost-effective: groupage is the cheapest shipping option as price is based on the cubic volume of your items.
  2. Space flexibility: only pay for the space you use, as little or as large as you require.
  3. Ship everywhere in America: we can ship your container to any location in America.

Air Freight: for when you need items urgently

Our air freight shipping option is the fastest and the most expensive. This is usually recommended for individuals needing a few items urgently (like extra baggage or forgotten items).

When weighing up your shipping options, work out whether air freight is worth the extra expense for your particular needs.

Key benefits:

  1. Speed: this is by far the fastest shipping option.
  2. Essentials: air freight is perfect if there are a small amount of items that you need immediately.
  3. Fly anywhere in America: wherever you are in the USA, we’ll get your items delivered to you.

How long will shipping take?

  1. FCL: shipping takes approximately 6-7 weeks for the Los Angeles port or 8-9 weeks for New York.
  2. Groupage: once the container has been filled, this shipping option takes between 12-16 weeks.
  3. Air Freight: the speediest shipping, air freight usually takes 2-3 weeks.

The US have a particularly strict customs, and it is worth familiarising yourself with the rules and regulations before you make the move.

Some items that cannot be shipped, include:

  2. Alcohol should not be included due to costs for clearance and duty
  3. Drug paraphernalia
  4. Merchandise from Cuba, Iran, Burma or Sudan

Firearms and weapons

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) regulates and restricts firearm and weapon importation.

If you are planning to import firearms or weapons to the USA, you must do so through a licensed importer, dealer or manufacturer. Requests for import must be made with an ATF form and permit.

What you can: shipping vehicles to the USA

article.originalThere are a number of regulations and requirements around importing vehicles into the US. It is a complicated and costly process and not many private individuals ship their vehicles to the USA. All vehicles must comply with all relevant safety standards. It is advised that before proceeding to import a vehicle you contact the Environmental Protection Agency (EDA) and Department of Transportation (DOT).

To import a vehicle to the USA, these are some of the requirements:

  1. Vehicles must meet the fuel-emission requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency and the safety, bumper and theft prevention standards of the U.S Department of Transportation
  2. Vehicles bought in foreign countries must be modified to meet American standards - it is unlikely a vehicle obtained abroad will meet all relevant standards
  3. Vehicles entering the US that do not comply with the standards are either brought into compliance, exported or destroyed
  4. Necessary documentation includes the original bill of lading, bill of sale and foreign registration
  5. Relevant EPA form 3520-1 and DOT form HS-7

If you’ve got a query regarding shipping vehicles to the US, give us a call. We’re here to help!

What you can: shipping pets to the USA

While it is possible to ship pets to the US, there are certain restrictions and prohibitions. Rules differ between states, and it is always wise to check the requirements of the specific state that you are travelling to.

Unlike other countries, there is no quarantine in the US. Dogs and cats from New Zealand do not require rabies vaccinations, as New Zealand is a rabies-free country.
