What you need to know when moving to France

Moving to FranceIs your household relocating to France? The team at Transworld can help make your move simple and stress-free. We take care of all your shipping needs, from door to door, so you can focus on starting your new chapter living in France.

It’s safe to say we’ve had our fair share of experience when it comes to moving overseas. We’ve put together useful tips and advice around relocating to France:

  1. Shipping options
  2. French customs
  3. What you can and can’t take

Shipping your personal belongings: your options

As you plan your move to France, there are some options to consider when it comes to shipping. Ask yourself these questions to find out which option is best for you and your family:

  1. How much do you want to ship?
  2. What’s your budget?
  3. How fast do you want your goods to arrive?

FCL: for when you’re moving with a lot

Relocating to FranceFor those moving to France with their entire household, this option is the way to go. You get a full container load (FCL) for all of your belongings.

The FCL option is a fast and efficient way of shipping your possessions. Because you have the whole container to yourself, you don’t have to wait around for other people’s freight. Once it has been loaded and checked, it will get on its way to France.

Transworld delivers to everywhere in France, so you’ll get door to door service, wherever you’ll be living in France.

Key benefits:

  1. Bigger capacity: you can fit your whole household into one of our containers.
  2. Speedy shipping: with only your items to get loaded and checked, FCL is the fastest way to transport goods. Once they’re loaded, they can get on their way to France.
  3. Shipping to any location: we ship to anywhere to France.

Groupage: for when you’re happy to share

Our Groupage option allows you to share a container load with other people also relocating to France, making it our most affordable option. It’s the perfect fit for those with fewer belongings to ship.

This service takes longer than our other options because shipping is delayed until the container is full.

Key benefits:

  1. Cost effective: Our Groupage option is the most economical choice when moving to France, as you’re sharing the load with others.
  2. Space efficiency: Only pay for the amount of space you use.
  3. We ship to everywhere in France: Door-to-door service, wherever you’re going to live in France.

Air Freight: for when time is of the essence

Air Freight to FranceAs our fastest and most expensive shipping method when relocating to France, this option is perfect for those who need a smaller number of items shipped urgently.

Because this service costs considerably more than our other options, be sure of its necessity.

Key benefits:

  1. Speed: This is the fasted way to get your belongings to France.
  2. Good for emergency items: the best way to get those last few things you can’t do without.
  3. We ship everywhere in France: We’ll get your things delivered to your door, wherever you are moving to.

How long will shipping take?

  1. FCL: Approximately 8-9 weeks.
  2. Groupage: Approximately 12 weeks.
  3. Air Freight: Approximately 2-3 weeks.

French Customs and QuarantineWe’re experts when it comes to French customs. Our Transworld team will take care of all your customs needs for your move to France, as part of our door-to-door service.

Our Transworld team understand what’s involved in shipping your household to France and can prepare you accordingly.

We take care of:

  1. Giving you the necessary French customs forms.
  2. Compiling an inventory of all packed items for use in customs.

What you need to do:

  1. Make sure your Passport, Residency Document and Visa are all up to date.

What you can and can’t ship to France

What you can’t: prohibited and restricted items

Prohibited & Restricted Items in FranceWhen shipping your belongings into France, there are rules and regulations around some items.

Alcohol must be inventoried separately with brand name, type, amount, number of bottles, and value (Import license or liquor license may be required).

The following items are prohibited altogether:

  1. Paints, polishes and cleaning solutions
  2. Live plants
  3. Drugs and narcotics
  4. Pornographic material
  5. Ivory and animal skins
  6. Explosives and matches

Firearms and weapons

The importing of guns, weapons and ammunition into France is highly regulated. You may require registration and certificates and have the authorization from the French Defense Ministry (for which you’ll need to provide make, caliber, serial number and purpose).

Some weapons are strictly prohibited. We recommend contacting the French Defense Ministry to find out if you can bring your firearm into France.

What you can: vehicles

Importing Firearms & Weapons into FrancePeople moving to and intending to live in France for some time may bring in one vehicle duty free, if it has been owned and used 6 months prior to shipping.

The car must pass the inspection for compliance with French standards and must be roadworthy. As the owner, you will need to supply the following documents:

  1. Purchase Invoice
  2. Original title showing owner's name and vehicle serial number
  3. Insurance Certificate from French insurer
  4. Registration Card
  5. Plate numbers

Moving to Germany

What you need to know when moving to Germany

Moving to GermanyRelocating your household to another country can be a stressful time. At Transworld, we’re here to make moving to Germany easy for you. We take care of all your household shipping needs with our expert, door-to-door service.

To make your transition to living in Germany as smooth as possible, we’ve simplified what you need to know into some useful tips about:

  1. Shipping options
  2. German customs
  3. What you can and can't take

Shipping your personal belongings: your options

When planning your move to Germany, you’ve got some shipping options. Asking yourself the following questions will make sure you’re making the right choice for you and your household.

  1. How much do you want to ship?
  2. What's your budget?
  3. How fast do you want your goods to arrive?

FCL: for when bigger is better

If you’re moving your entire household to Germany, we recommend the FCL (full container load) option.

You get the whole container to yourself, giving you more space and meaning you don’t have to wait for anybody else’s freight. This makes FCL a fast and efficient option, as once your goods are checked and loaded, they’re ready to be shipped.

Transworld delivers to everywhere in Germany, so no matter where your new home is, we’ll get your belongings brought to the door.

Key benefits:

  1. More space: Our containers are big, meaning you can fit your whole household (and the kitchen sink!)
  2. Fast and efficient: When your goods are loaded and checked, there’s no waiting around, and they can get on their way to Germany.
  3. Ship to any location in Germany: Our team of experts at Transworld deliver door-to-door service, no matter where you’re going to live in Germany.

Groupage: when sharing is smarter

sea cargoOur Groupage shipping option is better suited for those moving to Germany with only a few items, or for a smaller household.

With this option, you can share a container load with others relocating to Germany. This is our cheapest option, but because shipping is held until the container is filled, it takes a little longer.

Key benefits:

  1. Reduced cost: Because you’re sharing the load, our groupage option is going to cost you less.
  2. Pay for what you use: For this option, pricing is decided by the volume of your items, so you only pay for the space you’re taking up.
  3. Ship to everywhere in Germany: No place is too remote for our team at Transworld.

Air freight: for speedy shipping

Our Air Freight option is the best for those who need their items shipped in a hurry. Because this service is more expensive, it’s best for shipping smaller items that you need immediately.

Key benefits:

  1. Fast: Our Air Freight service is the speediest way to ship something to Germany.
  2. Great for essentials: When you need something quickly that you just can’t do without, this is the best option for you.
  3. Ship to everywhere in Germany: We deliver speedy service, where ever you need us.

Firearms and weapons
