Moving to Germany

What you need to know when moving to Germany

Moving to GermanyRelocating your household to another country can be a stressful time. At Transworld, we’re here to make moving to Germany easy for you. We take care of all your household shipping needs with our expert, door-to-door service.

To make your transition to living in Germany as smooth as possible, we’ve simplified what you need to know into some useful tips about:

  1. Shipping options
  2. German customs
  3. What you can and can't take

Shipping your personal belongings: your options

When planning your move to Germany, you’ve got some shipping options. Asking yourself the following questions will make sure you’re making the right choice for you and your household.

  1. How much do you want to ship?
  2. What's your budget?
  3. How fast do you want your goods to arrive?

FCL: for when bigger is better

If you’re moving your entire household to Germany, we recommend the FCL (full container load) option.

You get the whole container to yourself, giving you more space and meaning you don’t have to wait for anybody else’s freight. This makes FCL a fast and efficient option, as once your goods are checked and loaded, they’re ready to be shipped.

Transworld delivers to everywhere in Germany, so no matter where your new home is, we’ll get your belongings brought to the door.

Key benefits:

  1. More space: Our containers are big, meaning you can fit your whole household (and the kitchen sink!)
  2. Fast and efficient: When your goods are loaded and checked, there’s no waiting around, and they can get on their way to Germany.
  3. Ship to any location in Germany: Our team of experts at Transworld deliver door-to-door service, no matter where you’re going to live in Germany.

Groupage: when sharing is smarter

sea cargoOur Groupage shipping option is better suited for those moving to Germany with only a few items, or for a smaller household.

With this option, you can share a container load with others relocating to Germany. This is our cheapest option, but because shipping is held until the container is filled, it takes a little longer.

Key benefits:

  1. Reduced cost: Because you’re sharing the load, our groupage option is going to cost you less.
  2. Pay for what you use: For this option, pricing is decided by the volume of your items, so you only pay for the space you’re taking up.
  3. Ship to everywhere in Germany: No place is too remote for our team at Transworld.

Air freight: for speedy shipping

Our Air Freight option is the best for those who need their items shipped in a hurry. Because this service is more expensive, it’s best for shipping smaller items that you need immediately.

Key benefits:

  1. Fast: Our Air Freight service is the speediest way to ship something to Germany.
  2. Great for essentials: When you need something quickly that you just can’t do without, this is the best option for you.
  3. Ship to everywhere in Germany: We deliver speedy service, where ever you need us.

How long will shipping take?

  1. FCL: Approximately 8-9 weeks
  2. Groupage: Approximately 12 weeks
  3. Air Freight: Approximately 2-3 weeks

Let us take care of customs

German CustomsAs part of our door-to-door service, our Transworld team will take care of all the customs involved in moving to Germany. In this case, Germany has no quarantine requirements, which makes your move more straightforward.

We’ve been handling German customs for years, and we understand what’s involved in the process and can prepare you accordingly.

We take care of:

  1. Giving you the necessary German customs forms
  2. Compiling an inventory of all packed items for use in customs

What you can and can’t ship to Germany

What you can’t: prohibited and restricted items

When shipping to Germany, there are a few regulations and restrictions to be aware of while packing your bags.

Certain restricted items include:

  1. Pornographic material.
  2. Media featuring "unconstitutional content", which includes literature that trivializes or glamorizes Germany’s role in World War II and any symbols associated with the Nazi regime.
  3. Plants. Contact the German customs office to see if your plants comply with the sanitary plant protection code.

If you’re not sure about something you’re packing give us a ring, we’re always happy to help!

Firearms and weapons

All firearms (and ammunition) must be declared when shipping to Germany. Due to fairly strict firearm restrictions in Germany, you will likely require a special permit, or not be allowed at all. If you want to bring a firearm with you, contact your nearest German Embassy.

What you can: vehicles

Moving Cars to GermanyYou can bring your car with you on your move to Germany, but there may be hefty taxes applicable depending on your residence status and how long you have owned the vehicle. Our helpful team can advise on the best options that are available.

What you can: pets

To bring your cat or dog into Germany, you’ll need:

      1. Proof of rabies vaccination, which can be no older than 12 months and no more recent than 30 days.
      2. Proof of identification so you can apply for a 'pet passport' on arrival in Germany.
      3. A health certificate from your vet.
