Moving to the UKAre you moving to the UK from NZ and want to weigh up your shipping options?

As certified and knowledge moving specialists, the team at Transworld are here to make your move to the UK as stress-free as it can be. Whether you’re emigrating to the UK with your family, or heading off by yourself, we understand that there’s a lot to consider.

To help you with your move to UK, we've put together useful tips and advice around:

  1. Shipping options
  2. British customs
  3. What you can and can't take

Shipping your personal belongs: your options

When you're emigrating to UK, there are several shipping options available here at Transworld. To make the best choice for you, there are a few factors to consider:

  1. How much do you want to ship?
  2. What's your budget?
  3. How fast do you want your goods to arrive?

FCL: when you’re moving your whole household

Moving Household to the UKIf you are shipping a full household to the UK, we recommend a full-container load (FCL).

We offer regular shipping services to all European ports and cities, so FCL is often a popular choice for those shipping personal belongings to UK. This is a fast way to ship as you're not sharing the container with others. Once it's loaded, it'll be taken directly to the port for an efficient shipping time.

Key benefits:

  1. Extra space: our full containers can usually fit a whole household of items, so this is a great option if you need that extra space.
  2. Efficient shipping times: FCL offers reasonably speedy shipping times to the UK.
  3. Shipping to any location in the UK: with FCL, we can ship to all locations in the UK.

Groupage: for when you're happy to share

For those with a small household or just looking to ship a few items, Groupage shipping lets you share a container with others moving to the UK.

Because it's shared, it's the most economical option for shipping to the UK from NZ. It's important to note that this service may take a little longer while we wait to fill the container before heading to the UK, but it can be a very cost effective option.

Key benefits:

  1. More economical: since you're sharing the container with others, this is a more economical option compared to FCL and air freight.
  2. Your choice of space: with flexibility of space, you can choose how much you want to ship, and only pay for the space you use.
  3. Ship all over the UK: just like FCL, our Groupage shipping can be delivered to any location throughout the UK.

Air Freight: for when you want it extra fast

Air Freight to the UKAir Freight is the fastest shipping option to the UK and it is the most expensive. Generally, we find this is a good option if you want to fast track a few essential items (like extra baggage) across to the UK.

As air freight costs more than FCL or Groupage, it's important to consider the urgency against the cost of air freight.

Key benefits:

  1. Fast transit time: air freight offers the fastest transit time to get your items to the UK.
  2. Ideal for those few important items: as the fastest option, air freight is ideal when you need those essential items delivered quickly.
  3. Fly to any location in the UK: air freight items can be delivered to any city or town in the UK.

How long will shipping take?

  1. FCL: After all your items have been loaded, shipping to the UK will take approximately 9-10 weeks.
  2. Groupage: For Groupage shipping, transit time to the UK will typically take 10-12 weeks.
  3. Air Freight: As the fastest shipping options, air freight will usually take 2-3 weeks.
